Somewhere between infancy and becoming a pro, he became fascinated by the organ, and it became, happily for us, his instrument. He admits to being influenced by the great Jimmy Smith, who offered McGriff considerable encouragement at the onset of his career. - JIMMY McGRIFF, wizard of the jazz organ, literally exploded into stardom in 1962, and has been hurtling onwards and upwards ever since. His musicianship, his superb sense of timing, and his unique rhythmic drive position him head and shoulders above the competition, and yet he´s only twenty-eight years of age and his career is still in its infancy. - The name of the game here is Soul. And Jimmy McGriff plays it very well, indeed. He makes the verb "to cook" become a way of life here. - Sample, for example, the lovely ballad standard, "I Cover The Waterfront." Now, when was the last time you heard this great song? And wasn´t it sung or played as a torcher? Sure it was. But listen to the McGriff riff. It opens with Big M pecking out the tune in short, rhythmic bursts, paced by a cooking rhythm section. And it doesn´t let up for a full five minutes. That´s what you´ve gotta call covering. "I Cover The Waterfront." - "D.B. Blues" has a hauntingly familiar ring. McGriff breaks the blues down to two parts. The first features him whispering at the keyboard until the last chorus, when he rears back and lets that McGriff Soul come through with all the stops open. - Part II of #D.B. Blues# opens with the same sad rhythmic figures, but this time McGriff is preaching. And the message he lays down is down home and brimming with that four-letter word that means "spirit." And notice how McGriff makes his organ sound like a full band behind the hornmen. "It´s all right," he seems to be preaching, "Baby, it´s aaalll right." And it is. - Ma Rainey´s wonderful classic blues, "See See Rider," is back in the fast tour groove. McGriff preaches a little bit up front as he lays down the familiar melody while the rhythm section steams! Then he swings into a solo that spurts along in short, choppy bursts of drive, almost as if JG were afraid to et it all out. And it´s exactly this restraint that builds terrific tension and drive all the way through this remarkable performance. - "Red River Blues" takes off right from the start, with Brother J breaking up the melody into riffs that fly. The tempo is up and punching, and Griff stays on it all the way, finally bringing it on home. - "Hallelujah" is real soul food, from out back by the chicken shack. McGriff gets into a rocking groove, and does some fancy stop-time blowing on the keyboard while the rhythm section socks the backing home hard. - The next one is another story, indeed. It´s called "Boston Bust Out", and McGriff lays it out in a rocking two, with a message clear for every ear. JG preaches a little, struts, walks, even strides a bar or two, and then rolls it all up and brings it on back with a chorus or two of wide-open riffs. This is Soul, and notice the capita 1 letter. The end ing is a fade because it seemed there was just no way to shut off this swinging. - The wrap-up, "On The Way Home", gets back into that rocking, squirming groove. McGriff pulls out most of the stops here and just lets things happen. This is the kind of soul you can dance to or eat to or just stand there and be to. Home is where it´s at, and JG knows the way . . . all the way.
